In winter 1813, reeling from the recently ended French occupation of Vienna, Beethoven premiered his sweeping Seventh Symphony, a dynamic and uninhibited tribute to the soldiers fallen and wounded in the battle against Napoleon's forces. Stirring a feeling of patriotism in the audience, they immediately demanded from the composer an encore the 2nd movement, Allegretto.
