Why see Hedwig and the Angry Inch?
Winner of Four Tonys
John Cameron Mitchell's rock 'n' roll musical will be strutting out on tour in October 2016 after electrifying Broadway. Inspired by the music of David Bowie and Lou Reed, this show is a glam-rock odyssey that follows the exploits of transgender singer Hedwig (played by Euan Morton), a rebellious force of nature who has gone down as one of musical theatre's most powerful characters. Brilliantly exploring issues of gender politics, Hedwig is first and foremost an insanely vibrant and full-throttle musical marvel.
This latest production of Hedwig burst onto Broadway in 2014, with Neil Patrick Harris in the lead role. Numerous a-list talent donned Hedwig's tights over the course of the run, including Michael C. Hall, Taye Diggs and the creator himself, John Cameron Mitchell. Defying all expectations, the show won four Tony Awards and extended long past its initial 16 week run, eventually closing in September 2015 after a total of 18 months!
What IS Hedwig About?
Hedwig is a rock 'n' roll musical about a fictional rock 'n' roll called The Angry Inch. They're led by an outrageous transgender singer named Hedwig, formerly a German 'slip of a girlyboy' named Hansel, who had a sex-change operation in order to escape from East Berlin as a married woman. The story is told from Hedwig's perspective as the audience "follows" her and her band as they tour the country in the shadow of rockstar Tommy Gnosis, with Hedwig relating her lifestory and her thwarted dreams of rock stardom.
