Michigan premiere of Vanities
First performed on Broadway in 2006, the musical comedy Vanities is in itself based on a play of the same name, now 40 years old. With book by Jack Heifner and music by David Kirshenbaum, Vanities follows the exploits of a Texan trio of female friends as they navigate life, love and growing older throughout the sixties, seventies and eighties. Starting their journey as three popular teenage cheerleaders during the Kennedy era, their lives are dominated by their social status and their looks, rather than their more academic pursuits.
This biting musical explores the lasting gift of friendship through adversity and time. Following the journey of three vivacious Dallas teens through to womanhood, their joint journeys take them from cheerleaders, to college students, to married housewives, to indepedent women and finally divorcees. With the ever-changing and often turbulent times, they find themselves changing in themselves - whether or not they feel that they have changed for the better provides a poignant focus.
